A positive HPV result is an important starting point. But in cervical cancer screening, the information behind that result also matters.
In May 2026, the World Health Organization (WHO) published updated guidance specifically addressing HPV DNA genotyping in cervical cancer screening.
The guideline distinguishes between different approaches to genotyping, including limited and extended genotyping, and considers how these results can support risk stratification and subsequent clinical management.

What is the difference?
🔹 Limited genotyping identifies HPV16/18, with or without HPV45, while grouping other carcinogenic HPV types together.
🔹 Extended genotyping provides more differentiated information by identifying HPV16/18 (with HPV45 considered in the relevant risk group) and distinguishing additional groups of carcinogenic HPV types according to risk.
The distinction is not simply about detecting more HPV types. It is about how test results are organized and how that information can be used within a screening programme.
The appropriate strategy also depends on the programme’s capacity for follow-up, triage and treatment.
Translating Genotyping Needs into Testing Options
Cowingene offers a range of HPV molecular detection solutions, including HPV (2+12), HPV (2+16), HPV 28 and HPV 40 genotyping panels, designed with different target coverage and assay configurations.
For laboratories and diagnostic partners, evaluating an HPV assay means looking beyond the number of targets to consider genotype reporting, intended use and compatibility with the needs of the testing programme.
As HPV-based screening evolves, the value of genotyping lies not only in detection, but also in the information it provides.
