So when an HPV test is positive, an important question remains:

Which HPV genotype was detected?

This question is becoming increasingly relevant in cervical cancer screening.

In 2026, WHO published new guidance specifically addressing HPV DNA genotyping, including both limited and extended genotyping strategies for risk stratification and cervical screening.

That brings us back to a practical question:

Why test beyond a limited number of HPV types?
